What does the future of luxury air travel look like? According to Tino Schaedler and Michael J Brown it comes in the form of a lifestyle zeppelin. The concept craft which they have called the Strato Cruiser Airship is an enormous carbon fibre zeppelin with an advanced propulsion system and photovoltaic cells to make travel safer faster and cleaner.
This was the return journey home from our 12-day visit to Argentina which was booked several months in advance redeeming reward points from our Air Canada Aeroplan frequent flyer account. Given the great distance and long journey time from Canada down to Argentina comfort was a priority. So we decided to splurge treating ourselves to Business Class reward tickets. We actually boarded the flight at its origin at Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires Argentina for the short two-hour hop across the Andes to Santiago Chile.
But calculating the point at which ownership is less costly than other options isn`t simply a matter of toting up flight time and determining hourly costs. The kind of flying you do the places you go the number of travelers on the aircraft also play a role in the economics of ownership. For example ownership is much more cost effective if you primarily fly round trips avoiding deadheading costs or multi-day hangar and ground handling fees and airline tickets home and back for the flight crew. If you primarily fly one way a fractional ownership share or a jet card could be a better solution than full ownership because fractional and jet card costs are based on one-way flights.
